It's been a while since I showed any old ads from the comics, so for a quick blog post today here's a selection from 1972. A taste of nostalgia for the over-40s and a glimpse into cultural history for the rest of you.

I have been indexing some of my older UK comics lately and I have come across that Wayfarer ad a few times. It is fun to see some of these old ads, especially as I live in Canada so many of them are new to me. By the way I am really enjoying your blog, especially when you discuss some of the older comics.
I was a real football fan then but even I couldn't be bothered with the Shoot league tables. Seeing the Pink Panther car reminds of the PP bar which was flavoured/coloured pink. Best 3p you will ever spend!
Great memories of the Big League footie game. Don't remember being able to get live goldfish through the post though. Could you imagine anyone going near a promotion like that these days!
There was an even crueler promotion in American comics in the 1950s where you could order a live monkey through the post. Not 'Sea Monkeys' which were fish eggs, but actual baby monkeys! How many were still alive when they arrived is another matter.
Ken, I wasn't really into football but I did get into it for a few weeks every year thanks to the annual League Ladders gifts. I soon tired of it after five or six weeks though.

Aaaah good memories as those league tables were eagerly awaited by my friends and myself every year an after about 2 weeks they were binned - I do recall trying to make an effort to plot the places of the (then) 2 Scottish leagues and 4 English leagues and it taking me hours to move the teams about. I always wanted a Chopper bike and I think even today they look cool but boy were they dangerous on with that gear stick in such a dangerous position. I remember seeing that Goldfish ad but obviously never took it in , well at least I hope that even back then that sounded an awful cruel idea (monkeys by post is just obscene) ahh the good old days maybe weren't that good.
Still got those two Matchbox cars and still got some of those Viewmaster discs!
Yes, Paul, the "good old days" had many faults. One thing I remember was the amount of litter that was on the streets in those days, and the sickening smell of petrol in buses. I certainly don't miss wearing my coat to visit the outside toilet in winter!
Lew there's a book out, Ghastly, all about Scream comic. All the other blogs are talking about it, you should too, sounds right up your street.
I do not miss dog mess on the streets or big aggressive dogs walking around the neighbourhood. People, including my parents, smoking just about everywhere. Yes lots I do not miss. What I do miss most is the innocence of youth and the freedom to wander off playing for hours untethered by adults telling you what not to do. Oh yes and those PP bars of course!

Lew, see my first comment, PP was referring to a Pink Panther bar. You must have had the pleasure of eating one of these delights in the early 70s!
Ah, sorry, Ken. This cold and lack of sleep has scrambled my mind. I'm not sure I did try them actually. Was probably too busy eating Old Jamaica at the time.

If you are talking about the Pink Waffer for Pink Panther you can still get them. complete with Pink Panther advertising ^_^
Oh and Sea Monkeys (the real ones, not the... well, the fake ones sold these days (long story, look into the lawsuits etc) are a generically created (via selective breading) form of Brine shrimp. Which is a crustaceans and not a fish ^_^
really, it was Joe Orlando that sold them.. without his artwork and designs, I don't think it would have been as big a hit.
nice post though, old ads often seam to put a bit more fun into things.. sometimes lied a lot more but could be way more fun.
There still is dog mess and litter on the streets !! And nowadays we have food banks and a collapsing NHS so hardly a great improvement !
I don't see anywhere near the amount of dog mess and litter around than there was in the sixties, Colin. You're right that there are major problems today, but the point we were making is that the old days weren't as rose-tinted as some believe they were.
Lew the reason you don't see dog litter around so much is because owners now have a legal requirement by law to clean it up and place in containers situated in parks. There ARE still lots of dogs around, probably more than there used to be? They still sh** in the street but the owners tidy it up.
Ok. Can we get back to talking about the actual adverts shown above? :-)
