The world's first comic?

Thanks to Bryan Talbot for pointing out this fascinating article (written by John McShane I believe) regarding The Glasgow Looking Glass. Published in 1825 it's regarded as the first regularly produced comics periodical in the world, yet few know about it. The paper featured comic strips, word balloons, and even the term "to be continued" leading into next week's episode. Follow this link for the article on Wikipedia:

UPDATE: Shortly after this post appeared that Wikipedia article was deleted, seemingly for copyright infringement. (Had someone posted John's article on Wiki without his permission?)

Sadly I can't find John's article anywhere else but this site features plenty of info about the publication:

UPDATE 2: Thanks to Bill Gillespie for pointing out that John McShane's original article can be downloaded as a pdf from here (scroll down until you find it):

  4. It's really interesting stuff! I don't think we make enough noise about how old our medium is! Also the Americans are always claiming credit!
