A piggin' good read

One of the new British comics blogs that joined the Internet during Blimey's hiatus was The Oink! Blog by Phil Boyce. Dedicated to the cheeky humour comic Oink! that ran from 1986 to late 1988 the blog is a great trip down memory lane for readers and creators.

Every fortnight Phil looks back at the issue of Oink! that would have been on sale exactly 27 years ago. This week's post reflects on issue 15 which was a bit of a mini-revamp issue featuring a batch of new stories (including the first Pete and his Pimple and the first episode of Ham Dare - Pig of the Future). You can journey back to 1986 here:

  1. Thanks for the kind words Lew, it's been great fun so far and it's been fascinating reading the insights you've all provided. Been a really worthwhile venture seeing Oink! enjoyed all over again.

  2. It was a great comic to work for Phil and I'm pleased to see it's so fondly remembered by people. I still think it would have lasted longer if Smiths hadn't shifted it away from the children's section. I really don't know what they were afraid of.

That said - Oink! ran for two and a half years which is longer than some IPC humour comics managed. IPC's humour group editor Bob Paynter said IPC didn't consider it a failure by any means. I think it was probably ahead of its time.

  3. Lew, I've always enjoyed reading your fond memories of Oink! Despite being in my twenties then it was the one humour comic that could get me to laugh out loud.

  4. Thanks Christopher. I knew a few adults who used to buy it regularly. It seemed to appeal to all ages. I think if Smiths had left it alone it would have sold even better. Even so it had a good run for an IPC comic.
