Techno Troll gets the message. |
There comes a time when you have to ask yourself "Why should I put up with this rubbish?". I'm talking about the occasional abusive or confrontational posts I receive from anonymous people who have nothing better to do than troll. Yes, 'trolling'. If you don't like the phrase, stop doing it. It's cowardly and it's childish, and it's not welcome here.
Effective from today I'm blocking the option for anonymous comments both here and on my other blog. This should also cut back on the numerous spam comments that are notoriously frequent (as anyone on Blogger will know).
Comments are already moderated so they don't appear until I approve them, but I needed to cut out the time spent deleting trolling and spam, so getting rid of the anonymous option seems the best way.
Thing is, I know this will sadly inconvenience a few of you genuine readers who don't have accounts to log in with. I'm sorry about that. If you can log in with Google or whatever, please continue to leave comments as they're always appreciated. If not, we'll see how it goes, and if it proves counter-productive I'll reinstate the anon option.
Sorry to hear this, Lew.
ReplyDeleteSeemed a necessary step unfortunately George. As I said, I'll see how it goes though. If it it inconveniences genuine posters I'll reinstate it.

Sad to see some other blogger jumping to the conclusion that I'm talking about him, giving him the convenient excuse to go on the attack again! I repeat: the trolling was anonymous. I don't know who the messages were from! The main problem, the spamming, certainly wouldn't be from him, unless he's learned Chinese!
Sad truth is most people are gits.. simple as that. and Gits love getting attention. So any methods which can HELP stop giving them that (which is pretty tricky, BUT if a git has it's own blog which is attacking others, they can be reported.. cause it's bulling and that should never be accepted) is a good move.
ReplyDeleteI also run a blog and will no longer tolerate those idiots. To make a comment you have to be a member which solves the problem.
ReplyDeleteWhat ruins the internet are the sad mindless idiots who obviously have nothing in their lives and are probably jealous of those who have.
Right, best get off my soap box...
A shame, indeed. In the past, I used to comment anonymously though I did always include my name. I was just too lazy to open a Google account but am now glad I did. Keep up the good work, Lew. I really appreciate it.
ReplyDeleteI don't know why anybody wants to be anonymous anyway. I've always used my real name to comment - it took quite a while to add my avatar photo but I've done that too and I don't know why it took me so long. I hope you won't lose any readers, Lew !
ReplyDeleteI didn't mind anonymous comments, as long as they didn't abuse that option. I do prefer people using their own names though, and a photo makes the conversation feel more even as I always use my own name and photo.
ReplyDeleteJohn, thanks for making the effort to use a Google account.
The main problem wasn't trolling but the crazy amount of spam I had to delete every day. Hopefully that will stop now.
Manic, I wouldn't agree that most people are gits. It just seems that way sometimes. Anyway, I don't know why someone is objecting to the Anon block so much if it doesn't affect him.
ReplyDeleteHis rant today, combining old comments of mine with quotes from this latest post is nothing but a sly way to pretend this is all about him again, creating an opportunity to slag me off once more. Getting very tired of it.
Sadly , Lew there are a lot of twisted idiots about. If you can't do ...criticise instead. The awkward squad were always about...now someone has graced them with this new name "troll". Hope it doesn't spoil the fun the rest of us derive from comics and your fine blog.
ReplyDeleteTrue. Some of them hate the term 'troll' even when they're blatantly doing it. Others bizarrely see it as a badge of honour!
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't be surprised that my experience with people tends to be on the negative side.. I just seam to meet sooo many idiots, its become habit to take them as gits first, and then see if they are different.
ReplyDeletea bad habit, since they don't have to 'prove' anything to anyone, let alone me, but it has saved me a lot of trouble
Some people just get a kick out of causing trouble, Manic. The only consolation is it's their life they're wasting, not yours.
ReplyDeleteIn light of further false accusations elsewhere I'll just repeat: I was not accusing or implying any specific person of posting the anonymous comments because I do not know who the anonymous comments were from. You know, due to them being anonymous. I can't really make it any clearer than that can I?
ReplyDeleteIf others have a different opinion on who posted them, that's their opinion. So no more untrue allegations about me "lying" please, Mr.R. No more misreading what I've said and blowing it out of proportion. This wasn't about you. Move on. Nothing to see here.
