Advert for WHAM! No.1 (1964)

My thanks to 'stevezodiac' for letting me post this image of his on my blog. It's an ad for Wham! No.1 which appeared on the back cover of Today magazine in June 1964. I'd never seen this ad before and thought it'd be a nice little item to show here.

It's interesting to see the Wham! logo in a simple red spot colour. If the comic had been published 10 or 20 years earlier that's possibly how it would have looked, instead of the full colour cover it had in 1964.

  1. I thought about buying this magazine on eBay last week because I agree that the advert is nice and interesting - the only one in (spot) colour for WHAM! that I've seen so far. I wonder what other magazines of the time might have had adverts for WHAM! No. 1? Presumably, Odhams was the publisher of numerous magazines then? I have the issues of EAGLE with the ads for WHAM No. 2 and 3, they are the same b/w versions that appeared in WHAT! itself, only larger.

  2. There's another copy of it on eBay at the moment which I thought I'd bid on. (Although I'm not going too high on it.)

I'm not sure what other mags Odhams were publishing at that time. Presumably one or two women's mags? Was Woman's Day one of theirs? If they advertised Wham! in Today for the Dads, perhaps they advertised it in some other mag for the Mums.

  3. It's possible that I may even have seen this first time around, as my Grandparents used to get the Today magazine every week, along with the Beezer for me. We would visit every Wednesday, I would turn up after school and always look through their magazine as well. It was pretty interesting, even for a kid! Prior to Today, it had been called John Bull. When it eventually folded they then went over to Weekend magazine, which was better still!
If you ever fancy some more " sidewards " posts, Lew, there are 3 titles for you.

  4. I saw Weekend magazine at the dentist or barbers but my parents and grandad never bought magazines, only the Daily Mirror. I had the 'Weekend Book of Jokes' a couple of times though, which compiled gag cartoons that had appeared in the weekly mag.

    1. In which case you'll probably be familiar with the cartoonist, Sax, who used to draw vertical lines for open mouths?

  5. Yes! Love Sax's work. He was the cartoonist whose style stood out in those books.

    1. Just been refreshing my memory, my favourite from those days was actually REX!
Like I often do, I remembered them the wrong way round, as I loved both of their work.
