If you're not already familiar with the work of Gary Northfield you're missing a treat. A superbly funny cartoonist whose work has appeared in The Beano (Derek the Sheep) and The Phoenix (Gary's Garden) and elsewhere, Gary's latest book sees the return of his newest character.
Julius Zebra: Bundle with the Britons is a sequel to Gary's previous book, Julius Zebra: Rumble with the Romans. Mixing comics panels, cartoons, and text, the books tell the story of Julius, a gladiator zebra of Roman times. Daft, fast paced, and very funny. Here's a YouTube trailer for the new book:
With less kids having developed the habit of buying regular comics these days, I strongly believe that books like these are the way forward for comics in the UK. Periodical comics aren't dead yet of course, but comic books are an avenue worth developing.
