Here's an advance look at the cover to the next Doctor Who Magazine, which will be published on Thursday 27th July. Now, bear in mind there may be some tweaks to this cover before publication because I don't think it's quite gone to press yet, and tomorrow the BBC will announce who the next actor will be to play the Doctor!
Unless you read this blog every day, you may already know the identity of the 13th Doctor by the time you read this. I've no idea who it's going to be. I just hope it's someone suited to the role, and I'm sure they'll choose wisely.
Every time there's a new Doctor to be cast, people speculate whether it might be a woman this time. I know some people who are steadfast that the job shouldn't go to a woman. "Doctor Who has always been a bloke" some say. "Casting a woman would be proof of the BBC's feminist agenda" say others.
My personal opinion? I don't care who gets the part as long as they're good at it. Our childhoods aren't being trampled on if they use a more diverse choice of actor.
Whoever gets the role, it won't please everyone, but so far the actors in the part have won over much of the audience after a few episodes. The moral of that I guess is that we should reserve judgement until the new season actually airs, which won't be for a long time yet.
UPDATE 16/7/2017:
Jodie Whittaker cast as The 13th Doctor. Good choice! Let maximum fanplosion begin!

The cover will definitely change because the new Doctor is being unveiled on Sunday during the tennis coverage of the men's Wimbledon final.
ReplyDeleteYes, I mentioned that, James. It does depend on deadlines though. I *think* the mag goes to press on Monday, so there might be time to tweak the news page and add a little cover note, but we'll see.
ReplyDeleteSPOILER...?

My favourite internet rumour at the moment is that there are going to be two doctors - one good and the other the Valeyard. We won't know which is which. Step forward Jodie Whittaker and Kris Marshall. (By 6pm tonight this may well look laughable, or ....?)
This issue will be Tom Spilsbury's last as editor. So I wonder if his successor Marcus Hearn will have X is the Doctor as his first cover?
ReplyDeleteI think they usually wait until the new Doctor is in costume before they run those cover lines, James, but I'm sure the new Doc will be the cover star of the next issue (in their own clothes).
ReplyDeleteAh, the Valeyard rumour again. They won't let that go will they? :-D
The men's tennis champion BEING the new Doctor Who is an unusual choice, but it will attract attention, which the show is lacking a bit. I don't recall us having a tennis Doctor, but Matt Smith played football (to American visitors: the real sort), and "PETER DAVIDSON IS THE DOCTOR!" came with cricket kit and a very cross letter from the BBC about spelling.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to run with the new Doctor being Missy, which will involve a last-minute body combination and a lot of fibbing up to now, and will give us the "evil Doctor" option as well. Possibly one episode out of four, if you're going to let me say that and what it implies. I'm just being frivolous.
The announcement will be after the tennis I believe, not during. We'll soon find out.
ReplyDeleteI'd be insanely happy if Michelle Gomez was the 13th Doctor but I think it's highly unlikely because Chris Chibnall will want a complete revamp for the series, rather than any connection to the last era.
Richard Ayoade, with his regeneration accompanied by the Windows start up sound. There is no other acceptable choice.
ReplyDeleteDude wouldn't even need to act.
He would have been interesting to see, but can he do the drama as effectively as he does comedy? Maybe next time...
ReplyDeleteNow that we know who will be the 13th Doctor, Lew. When will you start drawing her? Will it be after the Christmas Special (after the regeneration) or when Jodie Whittaker takes over the role properly at the start of the next series?
ReplyDelete(And have you started practising drawing her yet?).
Officially it won't be until Jodie's series starts so we're about a year or more away from that. I might use her likeness before then if I think of a suitable gag. That all depends how long I'll be on the mag though if they have a big revamp. I never take anything for granted in this business.
ReplyDeleteYes, roughed a few sketches out of her so far. Attractive women aren't easy to csricature in my style though so I'll need more practice.
A good point there. You can't be sure that Daft Dimension will last much longer, since the editor is changing and the new one will want to put his own stamp on things. I assume you need to discuss that with Marcus, hopefully he'll be happy for you to continue with it.
ReplyDeleteThey might as well wait until January to do any major changes though, as they'll rebrand after the regeneration anyway.
Any major revamp for the mag won't happen until the new season starts, which is long off yet, so hopefully things will be stable until then.
