Pile up!

Imagine my surprise 30 years ago when I opened up 2000AD Prog 550 to find that John Wagner had named a couple of streets after me and my Brickman character in a Judge Dredd story! (Judge Dredd in Oz Part 6, 2000AD Prog 550, 28th November 1987.) Art by Will Simpson.

Here's the sequence in context...

  1. That's truly zarjaz, Lew! I am trying hard to remember if I twigged the reference or not in 1987. I certainly knew who Lew Stringer was via the fanzines that I used to subscribe to and buy back in the day. I seem to recall your being a regular in the letters pages. Do you still have those fanzines? Mine are long gone, I'm sorry to say.

  2. I kept all the fanzines that I contributed art and articles to, John. I don't think I kept every one I had a letter in. I'm sure some of my opinions back then when I was in my twenties would make me cringe today.

  3. John, if you want to revisit those long gone fanzines, you might find them at https://davidprice5.wixsite.com/classicukcomicszines where there are covers to lots of old UK fanzines, plus pdf files of complete issues in some cases.
Some of Lew's own titles can be found under Alter Image/Metamorph/Fantasy Express in the A-D drop down menu there.

  4. Sorry, David, I missed an opportunity to plug your fine site. Thanks for commenting.

Yes, John, I thoroughly recommend David's online archive. Well worth a visit.

  5. It seems your reputation is secure as this story’s set in the year 2109, by which time you’ll be brown bread. Either that or 150!

  6. Thank you Lew and David for the link. Some amazing stuff there. How wonderful to see Bemusing/Bem, Comic Media News, The Owl's Effort et al once again. Also lurking in there is a copy of Cerebro # 2 where I made my contribution to the X-Men universe writing a little story about Nightcrawler and Wolverine. Years since I have seen it. Unbelievably not very good but the beauty of those times is that it was all so new and so fannish that anyone could have a go at writing or producing art. I was in my mid-teens and it was the best time to buy fanzines and read comics. Your site is excellent, David. And so is yours , of course, Lew!

  7. Thanks, John. They heyday of fanzines was indeed a good time. I was in my late teens/early 20s when I was buying loads of them too. A real voyage of discovery.
