The 100th anniversary edition of The Sunday Post which I blogged about yesterday is even more attractive to comic collectors than anticipated. The free 96 page souvenir magazine includes 20 pages of full Broons and Oor Wullie reprints from over the years plus a two page article on the life of the strips original artist, the late Dudley Watkins.

Even more enticing for comic fans though, is that the 8 centre pages are a complete reprint of the very first Sunday Post Fun Section from March 8th 1936. Not only does this feature the very first Oor Wullie and The Broons strips, it also includes long-forgotten DC Thomson strips such as Silas Snatcher the Truant Catcher, Wishbone Wuzzy, Peter Pumpkin the Country Bumpkin and Natty Ned. Most, if not all, of these strips seem to be the work of Allan Morely.

The Sunday Post celebrates its Centenary

Scotland's much loved national newspaper The Sunday Post celebrates 100 years of publication tomorrow (October 5th). The special issue will include a free 96 page magazine which features strips from the Post's long running characters Oor Wullie and The Broons joining in with the celebrations.

Cor! Wor Nicky joins The Sunday Post

Thanks to 'colcool007' on the Comics UK Forum for bringing this to my attention. Today's issue of The Sunday Post introduces a brand new regular comic strip; Wor Nicky, written by Morris Heggie and illustrated by Ken Harrison.

Billed as "Our first all-new cartoon since 1936" Wor Nicky is a community nurse and a "feisty lass from Geordieland". A non-Scot comics character in the Post? Yes indeed, as the paper acknowledges that one-third of its sales are in England, primarily in the North East.

Comic fans will recognise the name of Ken Harrison as the artist who has previously drawn The Broons and Oor Wullie for the paper, along with many pages for the DC Thomson comics over the years, including a long run on Desperate Dan for The Dandy. 

The Broons and Oor Wullie still continue every week of course, along with mini-strip Wee Harry, all drawn these days by Peter Davidson.

Free comic mag in The Sunday Post

Today's edition of The Sunday Post includes a free 48 page magazine entitled The Broons Celebrate Robert Burns. As you can gather, the magazine commemorates the Scottish celebration of Burns' Night with a wealth of suitable strips and features. 

From the looks of things, most of the Broons and Oor Wullie strips in the mag are reprints from The Sunday Post. The majority were drawn by Peter Davidson but there is a resized Oor Wullie strip by Dudley Watkins from the 1960s, and a three page Broons by Ken Harrison that may be new.

There's also a two page feature on the Treasure Island adaptation that was drawn by Dudley Watkins. (Surely overdue for a reprint in full?)

There's a nice Burns' Night centrespread painting featuring The Broons which I think may be new but I'm not sure...

Amongst the other features there's Burns' Tam O'Shanter poem illustrated by Bash Street Kids artist David Sutherland. Very nicely done in wash.

Although a Scottish newspaper, The Sunday Post is available in England too (in some newsagents at least). Next Sunday's edition will include another free magazine; this time focusing on The Broons Family Tree.

The Sunday Dandy (UPDATED)

Comic fans should look out for the latest edition of The Sunday Post which includes a special issue of The Dandy. The free supplement features stories from the current version of the comic and is an ideal way to reach potential new readers as well as remind parents that the world's longest running comic is still being published.

UPDATE: I was led to believe this freebie would only be available in Scottish editions of the paper but I'm pleased to say the free Dandy was also in copies here in the Midlands. Presumably then, it's all over the UK!

The comic is in the same format as the usual weekly, and reprints stories from recent issues but with a variation of the usual logo. (Cover shown above.)

With the comic being available to every reader of The Sunday Post that's around 300,000 readers!
