MIND WARS comes to the Megazine!

Next week's issue of Judge Dredd Magazine, on sale Wednesday 15th May, will be 64 pages of all-new material as usual, and also as usual it'll be bagged with a chunky reprint of a bygone strip. This time it's a reprint of a series a lot of people have been wanting for quite some time; Mind Wars, which originally appeared in Starlord weekly back in 1978!

Written by Alan Hebden, with art by Jesus Redondo and Ian Gibson, Mind Wars is sure to be welcomed by readers. Judge Dredd Magazine No.408 features volume 1, and the second volume concluding the series will be bagged with the following month's issue.

As you know, I'm not posting on Blimey! as often as I did, and the blog will end later this year, but I thought I'd give the latest Judge Dredd Magazine a plug because it's brilliant!

Judge Dredd Magazine No.405 is on sale this Wednesday, 20th February, and the comic is on top form these days. Just look at the sample pages shown here. Anyone who thinks British comics aren't as well illustrated as they used to be clearly isn't looking very hard. 

This issue also contains a nice tribute to the superb artist Ron Smith, who passed away recently.

Ron Smith passes away

Veteran comic artist of many British comics, Ron Smith, has passed away at the age of 94. 

Many fans will remember him as one of the prominent artists on Judge Dredd for 2000AD in the 1980s (and on the long-running Judge Dredd newspaper strip in the Daily Star) but his career in comics began long before that. 

Ron was a popular artist for D.C. Thomson throughout the 1950s up to the early 1970s, drawing for story papers such as Adventure and comics such as The Topper and Hotspur on strips such as British superhero King Cobra.

Although respected by his peers in the industry, it wasn't until he freelanced for 2000AD from 1979 onwards that he came to the attention of organised comics fandom. Along with Mike McMahon, Carlos Ezquerra, and Brian Bolland, Ron Smith became one of the most distinctive artists on Judge Dredd.

Ron later freelanced for comics such as Wildcat and MASK before retiring in the 1990s.

My condolences to Ron's family and friends on their loss. Truly one of the greats whose work will always be remembered and admired. Here's a small selection of his amazing output...

JUDGE DREDD MEGAZINE celebrates 400 issues!

Any British comic in living memory that reaches 400 issues is worthy of respect, and Judge Dredd Megazine celebrates its 400th issue milestone on Wednesday. An impressive achievement. Even more so because the comic is monthly, meaning that it's been running for over 25 years. (The first issue came out in 1990.) Very few comics have even managed a fraction of that. Most impressive of all is that the quality of content is still incredibly high, attracting some of the top creators in comics. 

Issue 400 will have even more pages than usual, and will begin a set of new stories, making it a perfect jumping on point for readers old and new. If you've never bought the comic, or have lapsed a while back, now's your chance to get on board one of the best ongoing comics being pubished.
