2000AD goes all-ages for one-off freebie

An all-ages version of 2000AD is to be produced next year for Free Comic Book Day on May 5th 2018. It'll feature brand new content, and a notable absence of guns on the cover, to appeal to a wider age range. I understand there are no plans for it to be a regular comic.

Here's the PR from 2000AD...

2000 AD is proud to announce its brand new all-ages title for Free Comic Book Day 2018!

2000 AD Regened is a riotous new comic featuring original, full-colour strips packed with thrill-power for Earthlets of all inception dates!

With FCBD the biggest date in the comic book calendar, the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic has brought together its greatest heroes for a title for all ages – from eight to eight million!

In this issue: Cadet Judge Dredd upholds the law in a blistering crime caper at an Aeroball game by Matt Smith and Neil Googe! Mutant bounty hunter Johnny Alpha earns his Strontium Dog badge from Alec Worley and Ben Willsher! Tharg’s Future Shocks present the wonderful world of HumanCraft by Ned Hartley and Tanya Roberts! Help Chet Jetstream escape Hell Island with Henry Flint! Everyone’s favourite teenage alien delinquents return and they mean to cause some chaos in D.R. & Quinch Hijack Free Comic Book Day from Owen Michael Johnson, Colin Belland INDIO!

The special issue will be available exclusively in print from participating comic book stores on Free Comic Day, May 5 2018.

“At 2000 AD we’re thrilled to once again be involved in Free Comic Book Day 2018,” said editor Keith Richardson. “In the spirit of what this momentous day in the comics calendar represents, our droids have been working overtime to assemble a truly special comic, intended to deliver a healthy dose of craziness to the hands of Earthlets young and old!”

Free Comic Book Day is a single day when participating comic book specialty shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into their shops. Visit FreeComicBookDay.com to learn more!

What does Regened even mean?

An all ages 2000ad special is an unusual idea as Rebellion don't have anything else aimed at that market (other than perhaps some of their archive reprints.)

I wonder if this is a dry run for a companion version of 2000ad aimed at a younger audience ?

Afraid not. There are no plans for a regular version.
