Conan joins the Avengers?!? Yep! It's the story you thought you'd never see... unless you read the original comic last year of course that this issue reprints. It's surprisingly good actually as it's written by Al Ewing who for my money is currently one of the best and most inventive writers in comics.

Panini UK publish 160 page CAPTAIN MARVEL special

As I reported last week, Panini UK's The Mighty World of Marvel now has Captain Marvel as an ongoing strip in the comic. Now, making the most of the movie's popularity, they've also published a Captain Marvel stand-alone special comic. 

Its full title is Marvel Select: The Essential Guide to Captain Marvel and it weighs in at 160 pages for £9.99. Considering that Panini's regular Marvel reprints are £4.99 for 76 pages, this seems like a fair deal. The book reprints seven key issues from the character's long history and evolution, from the days when she was Ms. Marvel to some of the more recent comics. The issues collected here are: Ms.Marvel 19 to 21 (1978), Uncanny X-Men 164 (1982), Captain Marvel 1 (2012), and Captain Marvel 7 and 8 (2014). 

There are also new feature pages about the character's history, creator interviews, art galleries, character spotlights, and more.

You'll find this Marvel Select special alongside the Marvel Collectors' Editions in WH Smith or your nearest comic shop. 

I went to see the Captain Marvel movie today and thought it was brilliant! The cast (and cat) were spot on, and the story packs an emotional wallop. Too bad some pathetic misogynistic trolls tried to sabotage the film's chances by leaving thousands of negative reviews before it had been released, just because they can't cope with strong women, real or imaginary! Speaking as a straight white middle-aged bloke I thought the movie was terrific and if it gives women and girls a sense of empowerment then it's a job well done!

Preview: Doctor Who Magazine No.531

Panini Annuals coming soon...

Here are the covers to the Marvel annuals from Panini UK this year. As you can see, there's a Deadpool Annual this time, - and it's aimed at adults. That book has 96 pages, whilst the Marvel Heroes and Spider-Man annuals each have 64 pages. All are hardbacks.

Another Panini / Marvel relaunch

Essential X-Men is the latest Marvel Collectors' Edition to begin a new volume from No.1. Published by Panini UK, the first issue of the new series is on sale now, as a 100 page bumper edition, going to its usual 76 page format with issue 2. 

The relaunch also switches to the squarebound format that's gradually being introduced across the whole line, and a 51p price rise to £4.50. We're now living in an age where prices like that, and higher, are the norm for UK comics/mags. Sad, but inevitable, and out of the publisher's control. (The cheapest British comics are now Beano and 2000AD at £2.75 each.)

Anyway, the new Essential X-Men No.1 is a perfect jumping-on point for new or lapsed readers, so let's see what's in this issue...

Champions to headline Mighty World of Marvel

Next month, The Champions takes over as the headline strip in The Mighty World of Marvel, the British reprint anthology. The last few issues have seen Guardians of the Galaxy on the masthead, but the arrival of the Champions team of teen heroes will herald a change to the comic. 

The Black Widow also returns in her own series that issue too. Personally I'd have thought that having her as the headline strip would have attracted more attention (with Natasha being one of Marvel's movie stars) but hopefully the Champions will bring in new readers too. 

The Mighty World of Marvel No.14 (featuring The Champions) goes on sale on 19th October.

Incidentally, September 30th will be the 45th anniversary of the launch of the first series of Mighty World of Marvel, back in 1972! Here's an article I wrote about that issue for its 40th anniversary five years ago:
