Fireworks comics: MICKEY MOUSE WEEKLY (1950)

We go back almost 70 years for this richly colourful Mickey Mouse Weekly cover celebrating Bonfire Night. The glossy 12 page tabloid-sized comic was published by Odhams and contained a mixture of original UK strips and American Disney reprint. The cover was brand new of course, as Guy Fawkes Night wasn't celebrated in the USA. I don't know who illustrated this fantastic cover but the quality is excellent.

Inside, most strips didn't feature the fireworks theme, except for three on the centre pages. Again, I don't know who drew Cubby and Tubby, Pinocchio, or Snow White. The Donald Duck and Eega Beeva strips are American reprints. Rather than just show you the three fireworks strips I thought I'd show the entire spread so you can see how they were originally presented. As always, click on the images on this blog to see them larger...
I know it's a few days to go until November 5th but every night between Halloween and Christmas seems to be fireworks night these days. If you're attending any displays at home or elsewhere, I wish you all a safe evening!

Love the header of the bonfire night.. Donald has the guy...alos Postman Pratt must of saw Donalds car for an idea for his van :)

I bought this issue a few years after I drew that Prat page, but I think the idea of fireworks propelling a vehicle through the air is quite an old one. Hopefully David Mason (the scriptwriter) and I managed to put a new spin on it. :)
