Leo Baxendale's Big Chief Pow Wow

In the mid to late 1960s, Leo Baxendale quit freelancing for Odhams and set his sights on the better paying Fleetway comics instead. One of the strips he produced there was Big Chief Pow Wow for Buster comic. The strip ran from 14th September 1968 to 31st January 1970. (Some were fill-ins by other artists.)

Here's a small selection of Leo's pages.

Wonderful stuff thanks for showing these Lew. Buster was one of my favourite comics as a kid (up there with Smash)and Leo's work was always a joy, I especially liked this strip and "Mervyn's Monsters" they still make me smile some errrr 47 plus years later.

I started buying Buster regularly after the 'Power Comics' ended because it seemed the closest thing to the old Smash! I thought that balance of humour and adventure strips was just right. It's a shame it gradually became an all-humour title but apparently as time went on, new readers preferred it like that. Also, IPC had segregated the workplace into different divisions so "the humour group" had to focus on the funnies.

Leo's art is great as ever but the stories seem a bit weird if that makes sense
